The present hotel was built in 1769, but in other forms a Cross Keys hotel has occupied this site since the earliest days of Scottish coaching inns. Commissioned by James Dickson in 1761, Ednam House was built by the famous architect James Nisbet, whose work also includes Paxton House, only ½ hour from Kelso.
